Phillauri Film Review by Manya Malhotra

Phillauri

3.5
Drama
Cast: Anushka Sharma,Suraj Sharma, Mehreen Pirzada,Diljit Dosanj
Director: Anshai Lal
Story:In the midst of a big fat Indian wedding the groom is having serious pre-wedding jitters  and to add to his troubles a ghost from 98 years ago shows up at his door step claiming to be his newly wed wife.
Review:The film "Phillauri" is a refreshing concept . The first half is loaded with wacky  one -liners. The film constantly moves back and forth narrating Shashi's (Anushka sharma) story before she became a ghost and the present time . On one hand the girl at first shows no interest in the boy and on the other hand the girl has been dreaming to marry the boy since she was in the tenth standard .The scenes from Shashi's present are better than those from her past and you eagerly wait for those to come back.Shashi understands what Anu(Mehreen Pirzada) is going through as she has gone through something similar herself and  she helps make Kannan(Suraj Sharma) realise where he is going wrong. The scenes from Shashi's past seem a bit confusing and out of place but are somewhat saved by Anushka Sharma and Diljit Dosanjh's chemistry and the soulful songs.By the end of the first half a lot of things are unexplained and you feel like gritting your teeth but the second half makes up for the slow pace of the first half. The special effects are fantastic and the visual of a shimmery golden ghost totally works. Anushka sharma plays her part with ease and subtlety  she does not overdo  the ghost scenes as she easily could have. Suraj Sharma brings in the most laughs and is certainly the surprise package of the film. His Panick -stricken behaviour and frantic expressions never fail to amuse. Mehreen Pirzada is good too as the slightly desperate totally in love to be bride . She brings in the required emotion in the film. Diljit Dosanjh has an interesting role and is seen experimenting well. He seems at ease
both in the dramatic and romantic scenes.
The end might seem a bit over done for some and the film has some flaws here and there .However The fact that the director chose to make a film on such a risky subject and the novel idea behind the film deserves to be applauded.

Reminded me of another Indian wedding movie - Mere Dad ki Maruti -where Mere... succeeded and this one doesn't at times is because this one tries to do too much
