Review: The film 'Half girlfriend ' only really starts after the song Baarish. It doesn't take long for the lead pair's friendship to blossom. Rhea gives out mixed signals and leaves Madhav as well as the audience confused . Why is she stringing along the poor guy if she has internal issues? This is one of the many glitches in the story of this glossy celluloid venture. Why is Madhav so hung up on Rhea when she obviously does not want to reciprocate? Why is Rhea's mom suddenly worried about her whereabouts when she let her go in the first place? Chetan Bhagat and not Mohit Suri is responsible for all these glitches ,the director did the best he could (though he could have turned the melodrama down a notch). However , the best part of the otherwise average book did not retain its magic in the film. The main twist was just mentioned in the end without much suspense for the audience . The part in the book where Madhav finds Rhea's diary is not even there in the film ,which is a disappointment as that was the only thing that provided an insight to the reserved Rhea's feelings . It would have helped us understand her character better and evoked some sympathy in us for her. At one point of time you think that the only sensible character in the film is Madhav's college room mate ,Shailesh ,played brilliantly by Vikrant Massey . He tries to educate Madhav on the pros and cons (well mostly cons ) of going after Rhea. However , this is Chetan Bhagat's world of love struck people and society pleasers who are all engrossed in their unresolved issues so who has time to act sensibly? Rhea Chakraborty makes an effective cameo in this film and you feel relieved that it crossed the makers mind to let Madhav finally move on , or at least try to.
Shraddha Kapoor deviates from her usual style of overacting and manages to do a decent job. She should stick to these kind of roles and not try to play the bubbly girl because this definitely suits her more. She looks stunning too. However she has less to work with in this film as it's mainly Arjun Kapoor's film. He is endearing as Madhav and carries off the Bihari accent well, not too many actors could have pulled this role off.
If you have read the book , then you can give this film a miss because there is nothing new here . But if you haven't, and you don't mind desperation in love paired with popcorn and a few yawns ,then this ones a one time watch for you.
