Celebrating 2 Years Of Filmy Boli
Today, my blog completes 2 years and I am so grateful to everyone who commented on , shared the link of and read my posts. I want to celebrate this day by doing what I love doing, writing reviews! What better way to celebrate than to review a film I have been looking forward to ever since it was announced, did it live up to my expectations? Read to find out.Kalank
2.5
Drama
Cast: Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit-Nene, Sonakshi Sinha, Kunal Khemu, Sanjay Dutt
Director: Abhishek Varman
Story: Set in pre- partition India, Kalank tells the tale of two star- crossed lovers and their tryst with destiny.
Review: In Kalank, director Abhishek Varman and production designer Amrita Mahal paints a delicious world with lavish sets ranging from resplendent buildings to sparkling lakes and the characters donning dazzling and carefully colour coordinated costumes. Visually, it cannot get grander than this. However, my dear Karan Johar, that is never enough now is it? The makers get so engrossed in creating a magical and larger-than-life world that they forget to draw the line between fantasy and realism. The only people more reckless than the creators of this film are the characters depicted in it. Almost every one of them is so imprudent and thick-headed that it drives you crazy. Every action they take, no matter how idiotic, is justified by simply stating that they are acting out of love. Kalank does have some hugely cinematic moments that make us marvel at the motion picture. For instance, one particularly magical one when Zafar, played by Varun Dhawan, and Roop, played by Alia Bhatt walk towards each other with a burning Ravan in the backdrop during the festivities of Dussehra. We expected more moments like these, but instead what we get is a bunch of seriously confused characters mouthing heavy dialogues that I am pretty sure they do not completely understand themselves. Many random scenes are just there and do absolutely nothing to move the story forward. There is an arbitrary bullfight, suffering from bad CGI in the middle of the film to establish the daring nature of the lead character. The songs in this film, though melodious are seriously misplaced. During an exhilarating scene high on drama, you suddenly cut to Madhuri Dixit dancing on “Tabah Ho Gaye”, I mean what are you trying to show? To be able to enjoy this film you must be willing to suspend disbelief. You cannot question the logic of the narrative, because, frankly speaking, there isn’t too much of it. The saving grace of Kalank is its performances. Varun Dhawan shines on-screen with his portrayal of Zafar, exhibiting intensity and vulnerability in equal measure. Alia Bhatt gets a rather fiery introduction but her character loses that spark soon after. Nonetheless, she does manage to deliver. The chemistry between the two of them is as delightful as ever. Madhuri Dixit- Nene is top-notch and Aditya Roy Kapoor is a revelation, truly an artist to watch out for.
Kalank is to be watched only for the sizzling chemistry and powerhouse performances of the cast. If you are a fan of the actors, then you will not mind Kalank, but if not, then 2 hours and 48 minutes is too long a run time, wait for a week and watch Avengers: Endgame instead!
