Review: So we are back to the glitzy world of Saint Teresa, where academics takes a back seat and literally everything else is in focus. Student Of The Year 2 is set in the same college that its preceding film was, but the similarities end here. The whole concept of Student Of The Year has been changed this time around and now it involves a sporting competition between eight rival colleges with an absolute lack of female participation. The makers try to make up for this by ensuring that the students coach is female but that is hardly any redemption. Since this is a Tiger Shroff film you have reason enough to expect doses of action and a bunch of hammy dialogues, it is sort of a package deal. However in this film you see a somewhat subtler version of the actor, don’t get me wrong all the Tigerness is still there, but it isn’t screaming in your face like usual. Now needless to say this film is not the most logical one. Ananya Pandey’s character is given a backstory that could have gone somewhere interesting but instead it is just there to justify her behaviour and is conveniently resolved in under a minute. While in the first film the whole of the second half was devoted to the student of the year competition, this time around, the competition just takes place in the last 30 minutes. Before that we have a series of dance competitions because otherwise what will the girls do? Now to be fair, Ananya Pandey who makes her debut with this film, does have quite a meaty role and is not just limited to dancing and looking good. Disney fame, Tara Sutaria on the other hand who also makes her debut here, is not given much to do. If you can ignore the occasional corny dialogues, Student Of The Year 2 is an entertaining watch for the most part. It moves at a decent pace and has some foot tapping music to complement it. It is easy on the eyes and even tries to give out a message in its own preachy way. The film tries to explore multiple themes and does succeed in showcasing some of them. Tiger Shroff, as I mentioned earlier, is a slightly restrained version of himself here as he is not the stud who shamelessly stalks and flirts with girls. Neither is he the rebel who .. well ...shamelessly stalks and flirts with girls. He is just a simple guy ( with killer abs and impeccable dancing skills) who wants to fulfil his dreams. Tara Sutaria, though she has less to do, manages to make an impression and with the right training, she has a chance to make it big in the industry. Ananya Pandey grows on you and by the end of the film she too manages to make you feel for her character. Aditya Seal is here too as the bad guy, you might recognise him from his stint in Namastey England. He gets ample opportunities to showcase his skill set comprising of dance and action and though he is not the best actor he provides apt competition to Tiger Shroff. Watch this one to relive your college days, or rather to wonder where you can find such a college!
