Review: Judgementall Hai kya is one complicated film. It drives you in circles and leaves you feeling dizzy by the end of it. Most of the weight of the film lies on the reliable shoulders of Kangana Ranaut. She plays Bobby, a character diagnosed with acute psychosis. She imagines people and situations in her head and we see the film through her perspective. Naturally, she is an unreliable narrator. The first 30 minutes of Judgementall hai Kya are extremely bizarre and the film has undertones of bizarre right till the end. You have to be patient as it unravels itself layer by layer. The good thing about Judgementall Hai Kya is that it keeps the suspense element intact, you are left guessing who the culprit is right till the end. The film is dark, it is edgy and the characters are well etched out. But it gets too carried away and the second half draws on and on. Given the nature of this film, if the performances by the actors had faltered then the film would have become a mockery. Thankfully, the always dependable Kangana Ranaut and Rajkumar Rao deliver powerhouse performances yet again. Kangana manages to make such an unlikeable character tolerable to such an extent that you even empathise with her predicament. Rajkumar Rao’s character keeps you invested in the film. Amrita Puri, Amyra Dastur and Jimmy Sheirgill in smaller roles are all quite likeable. Deciding to make this film was a gutsy move by Balaji and director Prakash Kovelamudi. It is a unique concept and even tries to send across a message. So, If you are not particularly judgemental and not particularly impatient and on top of that have some time to kill this weekend, you may consider giving this film a try. Except for Kangana Ranaut threatening to expose people, Judgementall Hai Kya is an original film and in today’s age of remakes that is hard to find.
Warning: You will come out of the theatre feeling overwhelmed, whether you will be overwhelmed with joy or overwhelmed with exasperation, you can only find out once you see the film.... no judgements!
